Applications Submitted to LAFCo
Del Norte Resource Conservation District – 2026
The Del Norte Resource Conservation District (“Del Norte RCD”, “DNRCD”, or “District”) has submitted an application for annexation of approximately 985 square miles (15,807 parcels), including all lands within Del Norte County not already within the District’s boundary. The purpose of the proposal is to facilitate and provide natural resources conservation services across the entire area inclusive of Del Norte County. The District currently provides services related to wildfire resilience, water quality, stream restoration and enhancement, agricultural lands restoration, and fish and wildlife adaptive management within its existing jurisdictional boundary and, in some cases, outside its boundary to the rest of the County. The annexation would allow for the District’s boundary to more accurately reflect its current service provision and allow for the District to continue extending these services to the entire County.
Smith River Fire Protection District – 2024
Smith River Fire Protection District (“Smith River FPD” or “District”) has submitted an application for annexation of approximately 972 acres (73 parcels) to the east of US 101 and located outside the District boundaries, but within its adopted Sphere of Influence. The proposed annexation area currently receives services from Smith River FPD on a “goodwill” basis with no defined responsibility or sustainable funding. The proposed annexation area is within the Oceanview Sphere of Influence (SOI) and has experienced residential development and population growth over the past 20 years, highlighting an increased need for fire protection and emergency medical services. Annexation would make Smith River FPD responsible for services and establish ongoing funding. This annexation was finalized in December 2024.
